CHAPTER NINETEEN

6:45 p.m., Denver, Colorado.

I had disembarked from my late-landing flight to Vancouver, and was rushing to catch my connecting flight to Phoenix. A quick check of my watch told me I had 24 minutes to make it to the gate before they were about to shut the doors. I was never one for having to change planes at an intermediate destination, but my preferred airline didn’t offer a non-stop between YVR and PHX. There were only four flights out of Vancouver that would lead me to the Valley of the Sun in the end, and all of them included a short layover in the Mile High City, regardless.

Much to my relief, the connecting flight was leaving the gate right across from the one I had come out of. Realizing I didn’t have to rush as much as I thought I had to, I decided to stop in a nearby gift shop and purchase a little trinket for Freedom. I had purchased a small plush orca whale from a shop in Vancouver, but since Denver was en route, I checked to see what else I could add to it. After walking for a couple of minutes, I noticed a candy shop a few gates down. I purchased a small box of truffles for Freedom and a little sweet treat for myself. It was going to be another couple of hours before I would land at Sky Harbor, and the complementary beverage would only satisfy me to a slight extent.

The chocolate bar would tie me over until I got to the hotel. It was going to be in the middle of the evening when I arrived in Phoenix, and I didn’t want to track down Freedom at such a late hour. I figured I would try to get a good night sleep and start fresh the next day. Besides, meeting your lover while experiencing jet lag kills any libido you may have. I wanted to be fresh in case we decided to pick up from where we left off before I was branded by Freedom.

The desert sun shone down on the Arizona metropolis. Phoenix is renowned for its dry heat, and compared to the usually mild and damp weather I was used to back home on the Lower Mainland, I felt like I was in a sauna. For the better part of the day, I stayed in my hotel room with the air conditioning turned on, and plotted my route to get to Freedom’s home.

A quick check of the area maps online told me she lived less than five miles away from Arizona State University in Tempe. I remembered she worked at the university, but I didn’t know what department she was in. I was tempted to get in my rental car and stalk her on campus, but I’m sure Campus Security would have caught onto me and start asking questions. I wanted to do this incognito. Freedom had planned everything to the last detail when she brought me down here originally.
